Alibaba and SAP Expand Strategic Partnership to Bring AI-Powered Enterprise Solutions to China and Global Markets

This article introduces the partnership between Alibaba and SAP to integrate Qwen into SAP's Generative AI Hub in China.

  • SAP is exploring the integration of Qwen into its Generative AI Hub within SAP AI Core in China.
  • The partnership will cater to customers in China and gradually to Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Africa.

The two companies will collaborate to offer SAP’s enterprise resource planning solutions, including RISE with SAP, GROW with SAP, and Integrated Business Planning (IBP), to customers in China and then gradually to Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. These regions will gain access to SAP’s cloud-native technologies delivered via Alibaba Cloud as a certified hyperscaler.

A key pillar of the alliance is the integration of generative AI. SAP is exploring the integration of Qwen, Alibaba’s large language model, into its Generative AI Hub within SAP AI Core in China. This would enable customers to tap into localized AI-driven analytics within SAP’s applications to enhance productivity, analytics, and decision-making. SAP also plans to deploy its SAP AI Foundation on Alibaba Cloud, offering scalable, enterprise-ready AI services to customers operating in China.

“Our collaboration with SAP reinforces our commitment to empowering global businesses with world-class technologies,” said Joe Tsai, Chairman of Alibaba Group.

“By combining SAP’s enterprise software with Alibaba Cloud’s robust infrastructure and AI capabilities, we are enabling customers to build smarter, more agile operations,” said Tsai.

Christian Klein, CEO of SAP SE, announced the strategic partnership with Alibaba during his keynote at Sapphire in Madrid. SAP is exploring the integration of Alibaba’s large language model, Qwen, to the SAP generative AI hub in SAP AI Core in China.

“Our joint go-to-market strategy can unlock new opportunities for enterprises by providing them with access to a comprehensive suite of tools and services.” Said Christian Klein, CEO of SAP SE. “Together, we can help our joint customers drive innovation, improve operational performance, and create new competitive advantages, and we look forward to working with Alibaba to shape the future of cloud-powered digital transformation.”

Alibaba Cloud will join SAP’s Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) Certification Program, enabling businesses to deploy SAP solutions on its platform. Additionally, Alibaba Group will adopt SAP Cloud ERP Private Edition for its enterprise infrastructure.

The latest announcement builds on a long-standing relationship between the two companies. In 2018, Alibaba Cloud was the first public cloud provider in China to offer SAP’s enterprise applications, including SAP S/4HANA Cloud and SAP Cloud Platform. The latest expanded partnership reflects a shared ambition to deliver AI-first, cloud-native innovation to enterprises globally.
