The Alibaba Cloud Indonesia GenAI Hackathon 2025 brought together developers from across the country to work on practical AI solutions for everyday challenges. Running for its third year, this event partnered with GoTo Group and KOMDIGI to create a focused environment where technical skills met real-world problems.
With over 1,600 initial registrations, the hackathon demonstrated strong interest in AI development across Indonesia's tech community. Two hundred participants were selected for the in-person event in Jakarta, where they formed 30 teams and ultimately delivered 28 working projects.
What made this hackathon distinctive was its connection to actual business challenges. Rather than abstract problems, participants worked with scenarios drawn directly from GoTo's product ecosystem – including GoFood, GoPay, GoRide, GoMart, and Tokopedia. This approach ensured that solutions addressed genuine user needs and operational challenges.
Monica Oudang, Chief Human Resources Officer at GoTo Group, and Dr. Bonifasius Wahyu Pudjianto, Head of KOMDIGI, opened the event by emphasizing the importance of building technology that creates meaningful impact for Indonesian users.
Three projects stood out for their practical approach to complex problems:
This team developed an AI safety system for ride-sharing that analyzes multiple data points – including voice patterns, behavior indicators, and location information – to identify potential safety concerns. The solution addresses a real need for enhanced security, particularly for vulnerable passengers during night trips or in unfamiliar areas.
Working within the GoFood ecosystem, this team created an AI assistant that provides personalized healthy meal recommendations. The system considers individual dietary preferences and health goals to make nutritious eating more accessible through existing food delivery platforms.
This environmental-focused solution gamifies sustainability by helping users reduce packaging waste from deliveries. The AI assistant encourages recycling behaviors and provides actionable steps for minimizing environmental impact while maintaining convenience.
The partnership with GoTo Group went beyond providing challenge statements. Their product teams served as mentors throughout the event, sharing insights about user behavior, technical constraints, and market realities. This guidance helped participants understand not just what to build, but how to build solutions that could actually be implemented.
As Monica Oudang noted: "This hackathon demonstrates how collaboration between industry and developers can produce solutions that are both technically sound and commercially viable. We're not just fostering innovation – we're building the foundation for Indonesia's next generation of AI applications."
The quality of submissions has sparked discussions about supporting these projects beyond the hackathon format. Several teams are exploring ways to further develop their solutions, potentially turning weekend prototypes into market-ready products.
This event represents one part of Alibaba Cloud's Global Hackathon Series, which aims to connect developers worldwide with practical AI challenges. By focusing on real problems and providing industry mentorship, these events create opportunities for meaningful innovation rather than just technical demonstrations.
For developers interested in AI innovation and practical problem-solving, the Alibaba Cloud Discord Community provides ongoing opportunities to connect with like-minded builders, share knowledge, and stay informed about upcoming events and learning resources.

The hackathon showed that when developers have access to real challenges, industry guidance, and collaborative environments, they can build solutions that genuinely improve how people work and live. These projects represent the practical side of AI innovation – focused on solving problems that matter to everyday users.
Let’s keep the momentum going — and continue shaping the future of AI, together.
